All you need to know about car insurance!

All you need to know about car insurance!

When 17 hits we start to think about learning to drive… How am I going to learn? Will I have enough money? Will I pass my test first time round? It can all be stressful and overwhelming.

A little bit about insurance…
The main use for insurance is to provide protection against body injury or damage that occurs to the vehicle. This is a legal requirement. Without it you can't go on the road with your car.

Time for a change?
In previous years new male drivers have paid higher insurance than new female drivers. This will start to change at the end of 2012 and there could be a rise up to 60% in car insurance meaning you could pay up to £1000 more. This was from an article from the guardian newspaper.
An article by MSN called "Girl drivers gone wild" stated that girl drivers are now starting to admit that they are being more reckless drivers.

Why is it so expensive?
Being a young driver the insurance of a car is ridiculously high. The insurance is worth more than the car and the car is thing that is meant to be protecting you from any major harm when on the road. So you must be wondering why this is, being a young driver you are more prone to accidents.

Here are some statistics from the AA:

·         1 in 5 drivers are involved in a crash during their first year on the road

  • young drivers have a higher proportion of crashes at night than older drivers
  • In 2007, 40% of passengers killed or seriously injured were in a car driven by a young driver

Some of us will have our parents or grandparents to help pay for insurance making it easier to focus on driving and buying a car. However not everyone is as lucky so might need to pay for it themselves.

I interviewed several people asking them how they would pay for all the costs of driving. I got varied responses from parents and grandparents paying for them completely, to the person having pay for themselves.

How to reduce the cost.
There are several ways in which you can try to reduce the cost of your insurance:

·         Pass plus driving course – the pass plus course is designed to create better drivers. It is a course to help to improve the driving skills of a newly passed driver and it gives them more experience. By doing the course it will significantly reduce the cost of your insurance. The course costs around £150 but will reduce the cost of insurance up to 35%.

·         Type of car – the engine and age can often determine the value of the insurance. So the smaller the engine and the older the car, the less insurance there will be.

·         Paying the insurance premium in one go – by paying in one go it will be a lot cheaper than paying monthly.

·         Keeping your car secure – Thatcham is a very well recognised car security company and the majority of insurers will give you a discount on your premium insurance if your car is fitted with this security system.
