2011 World Disasters

Global Disasters of 2011. So far.

Only halfway through the year and already several countries of the World have suffered at Mother Nature's hands. There have been volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and storms.

Some countries, in particular, have seen more devastation than others. Yes, you're thinking of Japan. Who wouldn't after seeing the news every day? And every time, the news changed to something worse. "Japan has suffered an earthquake", "Japan has been hit by a tsunami" and "as a result of the natural disasters, Japan has evacuated nuclear plant for fear of meltdown" are a few quotes from the news relaying to the rest of the world what Japan and its people were experiencing. Japan suffered for at least two months with earthquakes tearing up the roads and making strong buildings crumble and tsunamis turning once lush green and thriving wildlife into a barren wasteland.  And we complain about a spot of rain!

The Japanese got up and got on with it, and they built a road just six days after the tsunami and earthquake. Just imagine the possibilities we could achieve if we were that resilient, but you know, we're more than likely still a bit mad at the rain from the other day.

Another county that has suffered almost nonstop this year so far is Chile. Chile is a country in South America and it has taken hit after hit. Chile has had five earthquakes so far this year, all of them a range between 5.6 and 6.5 on the Richter Scale. Five earthquakes, is a lot and is seen to be a lot more when you consider the amount of trouble the Chileans went through in 2010 with the Mine Collapse and the 8.8 Earthquake. However, Mother Nature hasn't finished picking on the Chileans yet as Chiaten Volcano has erupted, prompting the evacuation of thousands of Chileans.  Chin up, Chile! Surely, no more bad hands will be dealt your way...

Another volcano that affected the World in 2010, or at least the Northern Hemisphere was the Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajokull , please don't ask me to pronounce it, however if you like to make someone smile, have a go yourself. The 2010 eruption disrupted Europe and its flights for weeks and there are thoughts that the Icelandic Volcano, Grimsvotn has the potential to be just as disruptive.

Keeping volcanoes and earthquakes aside, there have also been several floods this year. Countries such as, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia, Germany, France, Brazil and South Africa have all seen firsthand how water can be dangerous. Mass evacuations and deaths plagued the world as the normally calm element washed through the affected countries.

Hmm, I'm starting to sense a theme here. Has anyone seen 'The Day after Tomorrow'?

All over the World, specifically this year, an alternative natural disaster has occurred. Not only has the storms, the tsunamis, the earthquakes and volcano eruptions  made an appearance this year but also, the unexplained deaths of different species of animals. In January, the US bumblebee population plummeted. In February, bald eagles fell from the sky in Canada. In March, dead fish surface in Chicago, Australia and California and so on. There are no obvious causes as to why the fish died, which may give a little fuel to feed the 2012 prediction.

Yeah, I went there. These natural disasters point to everything 'doomsday'. The cries of "the end is nigh!" might become more common after reading this. And why shouldn't they? Especially when there was a weather report of there being snow in an African Reserve... Africa, people, come on!

Of course, if you do follow the Mayan Calendar/ Doomsday predictions, you will realise that there is no actual reason pointing to the World ending as a result of a giant earthquake, nor is there going to be a simultaneous eruption of every volcano on the planet.

The only thing that will most likely happen is that on the Winter Solstice (21/12/12) is that the planets will completely align. It is a phenomenon that only happens once every 26,000 years. See! You're alive to be a part of that! Your life is a history book! Imagine all of those stories you could tell!

So guys, you can stop digging your bunkers, you can stop storing cans of food in your basement and you can cancel or at least change the names of your 'end of the world' parties, as we are probably going to be alright in December 2012.

However, I would personally invest into some wellies or an umbrella, as you know, it's probably going to rain soon.
